Artist/Author/Producer: Heileman Brewing Co. Confronting Bodies: Richard M. Daley (Chicago Mayor), Roy Coffey (Chicago Sun Times columnist), and others Location: North America Exact Location: Chicago, IL Medium: Advertisement/Commercial Comments: A new ad campaign for Old Style beer included billboards of famous and infamous Chicagoan's testifying that they drank Old Style. One of these billboards included Al Capone. Opponents of the campaign objected that using Capone conveyed a negative image for the City of Chicago, especially at a time when the attention of the nation would be focused on the city for the World Cup. Chicago already has a reputation world-wide as the stomping ground of gangsters, to this day. Some Italian-Americans have been protesting the use of Al Capone as a Chicago tourist attraction for some time, and they too were against the appearance of the billboards. On June 8, 1994 Heileman Brewing and its ad agency promised to pull all of the offending Capone ads and replace them with one featuring Enrico Fermi, the Italian-American, atom splitting scientist and pioneer in nuclear fission who worked under the football stadium of the University of Chicago in the early 1940's to create the first nuclear bomb for WWII. Was this an admirable achievement? Source: Chicago Sun Times, June 7 & 8, 1994 First name: Paul Last name: Brenner Address: 851 W.
